Balance in Action: Angela's Story
To help illustrate how Balance can work, we’ve created the story of Angela, an avid cyclist who finds herself with a hefty bill after a crash.
Angela has been a road cyclist for over 12 years. She’s had injuries due to falls, but nothing more serious than some cuts and bruises. However, that changed during a recent training ride. A driver fell asleep at the wheel and struck Angela, tossing her over 40 feet. If
it weren’t for her helmet, it could have been much worse. Although Angela didn’t have a severe or moderate traumatic brain injury, she suffered a concussion and broke her leg. Her bike was totaled, too.
Angela was taken in an ambulance to a nearby emergency room. She was hospitalized for 4 days and had to have surgery on her leg, as well as being monitored for her concussion. After her release, she had four physical therapy sessions - once a week for four weeks.
Weeks later, the bills began to arrive. Angela was stunned. Her hospital bill alone was $13,000. Despite having health insurance, Angela still had to pay $1,900 that was remaining on her annual deductible, and also had to replace her bike.
Luckily, Angela had enrolled with Balance. So, she filed a claim and utilized Balance’s cash benefits to offset the costs of her medical bills. Balance paid:
Emergency Room: $300 ($300 for Emergency Care Treatment) Hospitalization: $1200 ($300/day for 4 days)
Physical Therapy: $400 ($100/session, 4 sessions)
Ambulance: $500
Total Benefits Paid: $2,400
After Angela paid her $1,900 deductible, she still had $500 to put towards a new bike! Ride safe, Angela.
